The activity aims to introduce children to the wonders and mysteries of caves through three themes: cave formations, speleologists, and underground life. The activity consists of two parts:

  • Through a “Picture Memory” workshop, the children will be able to discover everything they’ll find in the cave.
  • With the help of these images, the child will be able to put their thoughts into words, and with the facilitator’s guidance, stimulate their thinking and imagination.

Objective: To spark children’s curiosity and help them discover the underground environment.
Teaching materials: floor mats, colored dice, pictures, objects.
Duration: 1 hour and 15 minutes maximum
Capacity: 25 children maximum

AT.2 - Limestone or calcite?

This workshop will take the children on a journey to explore the underground world. They’ll learn about a caver’s gear and the purpose of each item, as well as everything that can be found in a cave. The activity is divided into several parts:

  • Exploring concretions through a hands-on activity in which students examine samples to feel their textures and shapes.
  • Introduction to and hands-on experience with caving equipment, and an overview of a caver’s work.
  • Learn about the process of how concretions form through quick, hands-on activities so that all the children can participate.

Objective: To understand the environment of a cave, what forms there, and how to explore it without leaving any traces.
Teaching materials: topic sheets, samples, and fill-in-the-blank exercises.
Duration: 1 hour and 30 minutes maximum
Capacity: 25 children maximum

AT.2 - Explorers of the Hérault Gorges
