Introduction

The Grotte de Clamouse is to one side of the road from the villages of Aniane and Saint-Jean de Fos to Saint-Guilhem le Désert. The site has always been used by humans: vestiges near to the sump showing prehistoric man used it as a source of water, a few ruins of a mediaeval mill, a turn-of-the-century verdigris plant for sulphating vineyards and, more recently, a turbine-driven electricity production test site.

The tourist site of the Grotte de Clamouse now extends all the way alongside and above the road and the resurgence.

Three means of access lead to the tourist entrance :

  • the botanical path at the foot of the great porch of the natural entrance, with different species of Mediterranean vegetation
  • the vehicle access road (for services only)
  • the panoramic path from the upper car park at the start of the Saint Guilhem le Désert road
These three means of access lead to a first level with the conveniences and the vast exhibition room presenting scientific research on the Grotte de Clamouse.

A few metres above is a viewing platform on the same level as the tourist entrance to the cave.
