The Grotte de Clamouse is within the boundaries of Saint-Jean de Fos, 35 kilometres from Montpellier. It opens a few hundred yards from the Pont de Diable, an 11th century bridge, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, where pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela used to cross the Hérault.

Nearby, the village of Saint-Guilhem le Désert, listed as a national "Grand Site", was a main stopping point on the southern section of the Santiago de Compostela route.

In 804, the count Guilhem, who was a great warlord and a relative of Charlemagne, founded the Abbey of Gellone and donated to it a vestige of the True Cross. The abbey was famed throughout the Middle Ages and is now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

All this is set in the natural untamed scenery of the Gorge of the Hérault, a listed site, to which the village of Saint Guilhem owes the attributive "Désert", an isolated place conducive to meditation. Saint Guilhem is one of the most beautiful villages in France.

At 500 metres from the cave is the famous pottery village of St Jean de Fos. For over 4 centuries, the potters who made its reputation produced the traditional glazed pots of earthenware, stoneware and raku. The village is also renowned for its circular layout formed in 1000 AD round the 11th-12th Romanesque church.
